Who Really Loses?

I read an article today talking about the recent debate going on in Washington about the extension of the “Bush Tax Cuts”. Some are saying that Obama has sided with the GOP in regards to extending all of the tax cuts instead of just the tax cuts for those making under $250,000 per year.

I have a contention with the statement that he has sided with the GOP. I say he has sided with America, not the GOP. Why must we continually divide our country into Red, Blue, and Other? As one of the greats, President Lincoln, said “A house divided against itself cannot stand”. We need to get over this whole us and them thing. We need to focus on what is right for America, not what is politically expedient in Washington, or what’s best for my little segment of America.

There is a reason that the term “divide and conquer” was coined. As long as those in Washington continue to fight and bicker based on party lines instead of basing decisions on what’s best for the nation as a whole, the American people will continue to lose.

As Scott Brown during the Massachusetts Senate debate said, “With all due respect, it’s not the Kennedy’s seat, it’s not the Democrats’ seat, it’s the people’s seat.” Washington’s main focus seems to have turned toward self preservation instead of the preservation of the country.

If you happen to disagree with me on that fact that this decision is what’s best for the American people, you may want to read a great article posted on CNN.com earlier this week. You can find that article here.
