We’ve all heard the saying “you are what you eat” before. There’s a lot of truth to this statement. In general, healthy eating habits lead to a healthy body and unhealthy eating habits lead to an unhealthy body. Did you know the same is true for your mind though? Your mind becomes what you feed it.
I’ve been realizing this more and more as I’ve begun to feed my mind books on self improvement, and business and finance improvement. I can sense a change in my own attitudes and outlooks. I’ve always had a fairly positive outlook on things, but I’ve noticed a growth in that as I’ve fed my mind with this positive “food” from the books, blogs, podcasts, and even the friends I converse with.
What are you feeding your mind with? Are you reading nothing but mindless novels and watching only mindless or even worse, trashy television? Or maybe you’re filling your mind with all of the negative news and belligerent political battles that are so easy to find.
What about the people you spend most of your time with? Do they bring you up, or bring you down? Are they always being negative? Do they talk constantly about other people? These things will affect you no matter how hard you try to n0t let it, especially if this makes up the majority of your associations. If you have a strong support group of positive influencers, then you will be able to handle this exposure. Hopefully then you can actually provide a positive influence on the downers and bring them up to your level instead.
The Bible actually even addresses this issue. One example is found in Philippians 4:8 (NIV),
Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable–if anything is excellent or praiseworthy–think about such things.
