I just finished reading the book Fearless by Eric Blehm. This book is simply incredible! Adam Brown, the Navy Seal who the book is about, was simply incredible! I could hardly put the book down. Adam Brown is a man to be looked up to and admired in all areas of his life. I would encourage anyone to read this book and be inspired.
The author spent countless hours interviewing friends, family, co-workers, and others who knew Adam and he puts together a detailed look at Adam’s life, both the good and the bad. That’s one of the amazing things about Adam Brown. He was very clear that he wanted others to know about the failures in his life as well as the accomplishments. He wanted others to learn from the mistakes he made.
This book highlights moments from Navy Seal Operator Brown’s life from the time he was born until his death in action as a Operator in Seal Team Six, one of the most elite units in the US Military. It not only focuses on the successes in his life, but also the struggles, foremost of which was his addiction to drugs in his young adult life. This continued to be a struggle and a challenge for him throughout his life. His wife was a major influence in helping him overcome and struggle through this addiction. In return for her dedication, he returned an unwavering dedication to his wife and children as well as his country.
The title for the book comes from the way that Chief Brown faced life, fearlessly. From a very young age, he let nothing hold him back. From jumping off the back deck at 1 or 2 years old, to jumping off bridges as a young adult, to mastering Sniper School and the elite Green Team with a maimed hand and bad eye, something which even Seals without these difficulties were often unable to accomplish. It also describes the way he faced death in action while performing his duty and protecting his teammates.
Another key component of his life that you cannot miss in this book is his love of Jesus. He is a wonderful example of the strength, courage, compassion, and fearlessness that Christians should, but often don’t, exhibit. I was so impressed with the way you could never doubt his physical strength and dedication to the task, but also his compassion. This is the reason so many of his friends and fellow operatives were willing, and excited to share the real Adam Brown for a book. They knew they could could count on him whether it was on a mission, or “off the clock” and dealing with personal issues in their lives.
I cannot more strongly recommend this book. Adam Brown’s story is simply incredible and keeps you reading whether it’s talking about his struggle with drugs or about a military operation he was undertaking. You will come away with an appreciation for not only him, but for our men and women in uniform in general. About the only negative I can think of is the use of occasional strong language that stems from interviews with other military personnel. I think the book would have had just as much impact without this, but it’s use was infrequent, so I would just exercise caution when allowing younger readers to read the book.
